2. The Sickle Cell Program is a major service of COBRA. The concerns for Sickle Cell Community Awareness, Education, Testing, Counseling, and Treatment were brought by William “Bill” Saunders to The Charleston County Comprehensive Health Planning Board of Trident United Way and The Community. He also informed the community through his WPAL Radio Talk Show formed and hosted by him.
The Federal Government funded this Model Community-Based Sickle Cell Services Program as one (1) of twenty-four (24) programs nationally from 1970-1985.
The COBRA Agency has two main components:
1. The Committee on Better Racial Assurance (COBRA) Human Services Agency is a private, non-profit 501(c)3 organization, chartered in the State of South Carolina in 1970. It has extended itself beyond improving race relations by identifying specific needs in the community and giving assistance in addressing those needs.
The Cobra Agency services, pass and present continues to embrace other service entities to form appropriate partnerships or alliances to better serve the community and its citizens. Cooperative state, county and community entities working together, provide greater benefits to the clients we serve.
